How we build

Our own crews

  • Masons
  • Finish carpenters
  • Cabinet makers
  • Concrete crew

John Caldwell, Jack Heckles and Peter Egan started CH&E in Lancaster in 1981, and the firm grew out of fine woodworking. Our own masons, finish carpenters, cabinet makers and concrete crew still do much of the work on our jobs, so the people setting your stone and hanging your doors answer to us.

Our 4,000 square foot millwork shop sits on our Grofftown Road campus. It makes historical reproductions, paneling, casework and custom mouldings, which lets us match what your building already has and keep a close eye on quality and schedule.

With design/build, one contract covers planning, design, permits, site work and construction, and we answer for all of it. If your architect is already on board, we build to their drawings as your general contractor or manage the job as your construction manager.

Who you work with

Peter Egan co-founded CH&E in 1981, and today he and Kurtis Egan lead the company from Lancaster.

Featured projects

Churches, campuses and landmarks

Most of our clients plan to keep their buildings for generations: congregations, colleges and schools, libraries, cities and housing providers. A CH&E project manager and an on-site superintendent stay with each job from preconstruction through the final walk-through.

We work from our Lancaster office across Pennsylvania and into New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.

Our services

Most owners come to us with an architect already chosen, and we’re glad to build alongside them. When you’d rather hand one team the whole job, from planning and design through permits and construction, we take that on too.

  1. Design/BuildOne contract from planning to move-in

We plan, design, permit and build under a single contract, so budget, schedule and quality all answer to one team.

  2. General ContractingWe build to your architect’s plans

Your architect draws the plans and we build them, with competitive pricing, qualified subcontractors and regular updates from our project team.

Breaking ground with our clients

Groundbreakings

Some of the best days on a project come before anything is built. We’ve put shovels in the ground with the Bethel AME congregation on Strawberry Street, the Wheatland Presbyterian Church family and the Dauphin County Library System, and we look forward to the ribbon cutting just as much.
